Sixers get first look at LeBron, while the center spot thins out

Philadelphia’s main preseason checkpoint today is the first look at LeBron James in a Sixers uniform, with the team planning to play starters against Brooklyn, per ESPN and PhillyVoice. That matters because it should show how the projected lineup fits together, with Jaylen Brown, Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid all in the mix. The other big storyline is health depth, after Ariel Hukporti was ruled out for the season and several other players were held out, per PhillyVoice.

Starters on display

The Sixers are set to give fans their first preseason look at the group they expect to lean on, with James, Embiid and Maxey all slated to debut against the Nets, per PhillyVoice. ESPN reported the starters are expected to play, which means this is less about random preseason minutes and more about seeing how the real pieces fit.

That is the useful part for fans today: Brown already has people talking after his scoring outburst in the opener, and the rest of camp has reportedly been about chemistry, especially with Maxey and new faces learning where their shots come from.

Defense and camp tone

Nick Nurse has also been pushing the defensive side of camp, and NBC Sports Philadelphia reported he is excited about the possibilities on that end. After a couple of intense, physical practices, that is a decent sign the coaching staff is using early preseason to sort out roles rather than just survive it.

The small detail worth watching is whether that energy turns into cleaner habits once the full group is on the floor together. With camp still in the adjustment phase, the defensive questions are as important as the flashy lineup on paper.

Center depth takes a hit

The cleanest bad news is at center. PhillyVoice reported Ariel Hukporti has a season-ending ruptured Achilles and will need surgery, while Anfernee Simons, Dominick Barlow and Adem Bona will miss the next two preseason games.

That puts more pressure on the frontcourt rotation right away. Even in October, losing one reserve big can change what Nurse can test, and it makes the next few exhibition games a little less about tinkering and a little more about finding workable depth.
